I am using USMT 5 to Capture user state on a Windows 7 PC. I have checked Scanstate.log and Scanstateprogress.log and the capture completes successfully but the last task in my Task Sequence, Release State Store, fails with error 0x80004005. I can go to the new PC that I want to restore the user state to and it restores successfully but also fails at Release State Store.

I am using SCCM 2012 SP1CU2

I uninstalled the State Migration Point role and re-installed it. I have recreated the packages and the device collection. I have looked extensively on the Internet for answers but can't find anything which has helped.

I have attached the smsts.log which shows the errors. I have also attached the scanstate and scastateprogress logs.

This is SCCM SP2 R2 on a Server 2008 R2. I have already checked all pre-reqs for WebDav and IIS, have removed and reinstalled the State Store (several times), and have run a Site Reset with the Network Access Acccount and the Admin account.

It seems that I may just be missing some sort of registry key? I thought doing a Site Reset would fix this but no go.

	Howdy, I hope this section of the forum gets enough visibility.

	My understanding is, that the normal flow if I want to run USMT backup through a task sequence and to restore to a different computer, I would need to pre-emptively define the source and destination. My searches have all returned very limited results and I am hoping there are more options.

	I'd like to be able to run a backup task sequence, either available or required, grab a random PC, and run a restore task sequence to install the data. I'm not pretending the software would know what the destination would be without telling it, but I'd like to be able to direct it without knowing the destination prior to the backup. The other scenario is harvesting data after failed remote wipe-reloads upgrading from 7 to 10. Without a doubt there will be hardware failures, and saving face may involve simply doing a hardware swap.

	So far I played with the OSDStateStorePath variable, hoping I could just steal the known path. It didn't appear to work at all, I suspect because it knew where it was supposed to go any my intended destination wasn't that.

	Am I playing the impossible game?

	Hello Windows Noob family!

	I am attempting to a very basic, nothing crazy refresh from windows 8.1 to windows 10 using SCCM with MDT. I am doing a user driven installation with the latest ADK installation. I create a standard User Driven task sequence. Under the capture user state step I have Capture all user profiles by using standard options selected, with verbose logging and Copy by using file system access - checked continue if some files cannot be captured and capture locally using hard links. Then under Restore User state I am using Restore all captured user profiles with standard options.

	When kicking off the task sequence from within the OS, I have no trouble managing the wizard... which reboots me into WinPE and begins the image. I watch it run the USMT package which "Processes the User State". When the image is done, the user profiles are not restored, altho - all the data is still there under C:\StateStore. I can browse through that folder and see all the user profiles that were backed up, and all the content is there.

	It just appears to be skipping, or failing? On the Loadstate portion... I cannot find any scanstate / loadstate logs - and the SMTS.log files don't appear to display any errors.

	Any thoughts from the gurus here? Thank you!

	Hi,

	I am also looking for some info regarding using USMT hardlink in WINPE. My goal will be to reboot in WinPE then to do a wim backup and then to USMT hard links. I am not getting this right.

	Will anyone be able to point me in the right direction on getting this right?

	Thanks in advance.

	Hi,

	We're looking at a wipe and reload on all of our machines because we're changing our encryption from Checkpoint to BitLocker as we move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. However, I'm wondering if it's possible to use hardlinks for USMT since we do have the Checkpoint filter driver as part of our boot wim. I can't find much about this topic on Google or anywhere else.

	Our environment is SCCM 1710 and we're moving to Win 10 1703 currently. Checkpoint is 80.64 FDE. Any advice would be helpful.

	Thanks in advance.

	I've found browsing https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/usmt/usmt-scanstate-syntax

	That there is a TS variable you can utilize to run command line options

	OSDMigrateAdditionalCaptureOptions

However, I cannot figure out how to utilize the following command to modify my Capture User State Task Sequence

The scanstate switch below is what I want to add into my TS so that it captures the installed application registry settings. The goal is to prevent having to manually configure some of the software for each user.

Hello,

For those who are interested in using a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to help with migration using USMT4, please check out my free USMT GUI. Although in its initial version, it has been meticulously designed to encapsulate most functions of USMT4 and is under active-development with much to come.

Program's Homepage

Here's a sample screenshot:

This is one of the few full featured USMT GUI's available not to mention that it's completely free without any adware/malware/restriction of any kinds.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hey

Im looking for some guides or info on creating a Windows 10 OSD deployment which would use USMT to caputre the user profiles on the machine and deploy it.

Ive created my task sequence and it runs and completes just fine, but never seems to capture or restore the data.

Here is the capture part of the TS:

the whole thing runs and completes but i never see anything about USMT... what am i missing?

when i run this locally, it copies to the server fine... but when i create an advertisement, i get error 27. i've already selected run as administrator, and have tested using "download execute" and "run from dp" but still get error 27 when running via an advertisment.

I know there are a few guides out there with how to do this but i really couldnt find one that helped. So im writing this in the hope it will help at least one person.

I will set it out in easy to follow steps as best I can.

Stage 1: Create the USMT Package and prepare System Role

Im not going to type this out again, im just going to point you to the excellent USMT package creation tutorial on the web site currently

http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/4512-using-sccm-2012-rc-in-a-lab-part-8-deploying-windows-7-x64/

Add System Role for State Migration Point

Click Administration > Servers and Site System Roles

Right Click on the server you wish to use

Add Site System Roles

Click next and put a tick in the State Migration Point.

Follow the wizard.

Stage 2: Collecting the information

The following stage assumes you have already deployed an operating system to the destination computer or the computer is new, on the domain and listed as a device in SCCM 2012.

Open SCCM 2012 Console

Open Assets and Compliance > User State Migration

Click on Create Computer Association in the ribbon along the top.

Under the Computer Association tab. Next to Source Computer box Click Search, Click Search again. Use the filter to narrow down to the computer you will use as the source. Click on the Computer and click ok.

Repeat step 4 for the destination computer.

Click on User Accounts Tab along the top.
The Migration Behavior should be self explantory. If you wish to transfer just specific user accounts (default) click on the yellow star underneath this drop down to select from Active Directory which users you which to capture from this computer.

Click OK

Your association is now complete.

Stage 3: Isolate the Computers

Click on Assets and Compliance > Devices

Find the source computer

Right click on the computer > Add Selected Items > To New Collection

When the wizard for a new collection appears. Call the collection Capture User Data (or something similar)

Click next all the way through the rest of the wizard.

Repeat the above steps for the Destination computer but call the collection Restore User Data

Stage 4: Create the capture Task Sequence

Click on Software Library

Click on Task Sequences

Click Create Task Sequence along the top

Create a new custom sequence > Next

Call it Capture Task Sequence or something similar

Click next to everything

Click Finish

Right Click on Capture Task Sequence and click Edit

Along the top click Add > User State > Request State Store

Make sure Capture state from computer is selected and put a tick in If Computer Account fails..

Click Add > User State > Capture User State

Browse and select USMT 4 for the package. Capture all user profiles using standard options. Enable verbose logging & Skip files should be checked. Capture using VSS option selected

Click Add > User State > Release State Store

Click ok

Deploy this to the Capture User Data collection you created earlier.

Stage 5: Create the restore Task Sequence

Click Create Task Sequence again

Create a new custom sequence > next

Call it Restore Task Sequence or something similar

Click next to everything and click finish

Right click on Restore Task Sequence and click edit

Add > User State > Request State Store

make sure Restore from comuter is selected and put a tick in If Computer Account fails

Click Add > User State > Restore User State

Browse and select USMT 4 for the package. Restore all user profiles. Check Continue if some files cannot be restore and enable verbose logging.

Add > User State > Release State Store

Click OK

Deploy this to the Restore User Data collection you created earlier

Stage 6: Capture the Source Machine

On the source machine, open System Center 2012 Software Center. If the task sequence isnt there yet, leave it for a few minutes and press F5 to refresh. If it is there, click on it and click Install. A warning asking if your sure you want to install and operating system. Just ok this as your not really installing an operating system

Leave it to do its stuff.

Once its finished we're on to Stage 7: Restore to Destination Computer

On the destination computer, Open software Center as above and look for the restore task sequence. When it appears, Install and click ok the message about an operating system

Leave it to do its stuff

Hopefully, your data should now be on the new machine.

Hi all,

I created a USMT scenario which worked fine for data/setting transfers between Windows 7 and Windows 10 (1511.)

I've updated our image to the new Windows 10 (1607). From then on the problems with the migration started. In my test case, only 1 of the 7 printers are transfered to the new Windows 10 (1607) image. Bofore that (transfer to 1511), all worked fine.

I use the following xml code for the transfer:

<!-- This component migrates network printers -->
<component type="Documents" context="User">
   <displayName>Mapped Printers</displayName>
      <role role="Data">
	<rules>
	  <include>
	    <objectSet>
	      <pattern type="Registry">HKCU\Printers\Connections\* [*]</pattern>
	      <pattern type="Registry">HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows [Device]</pattern>
	    </objectSet>
	  </include>
	</rules>
    </role>
</component>

The loadstate.log is exactly the same on Windows 10 1511 and Windows 10 1607. It seems that Windows 10 1607 handles the printers (or drivers?) differently?

Is anyone else having problems with printer migration to Windows 10 (1607)?

PS: Already tried the USMT from ADK 1511 and USMT from ADK 1607, both give the same issues.

Dear all,

I need your help.

In our USMT process, we backup registry settings which contains folder redirection of My documents (Personal) to C:\Data in our environment. To do this operation we have customized out MigUser.xml file which is attached in this thread. So when er use the loadstate log says no error but the rdirection is not happening. It stays at default user document folder.

For your information we are preparing the migration of users from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. In existing Windows 8.0 environment the user My Documents is mapped to C:\Data. We want to restore the same settings when user is migrated to Windows 8.1.

We really need help. Attached screenshot of customization & MigUser.xml.

For your information we are using SCCM 2012 SP2 to deploy the migration Task Sequence.

Regards

Hi All,

Im currently lookig to implimenting SCCM 2007 R2 sp2 for windows 7 deployment and so far have been successful at fully deploying an image precreated, gathering user data and even restoring after installation, along with app push etc.then i began to test the same on a single laptop, only to find i didnt have enough storage to save the users profile which was around 50Gb. To try to combat this, i mapped a network path of \\NASutilityBox\ to M:\ and then mapped that as a new state migration point.

Since i have done that, i can no longer get beyond "Request User State Storage" and a error 0x00004005 and inside of the smsts.log in c:\windows\system32\ccm the following message

I have even tried to revert back to the location of the previous state migration point (which was a local c:\temp test job to get it off the ground) and that returns the same error now.. can someone please help me fix this up, as i am truely stuck!
