  1. Hello all, We’ve recently implemented SCCM (Current Branch) within our organisation. I’ve previously used SCCM 2003, but obviously some things have changed significantly! We’re having a similar issue to this post: https://www.windows-noob.com/forums/topic/12803-windows-10-enterprise-computer-name-problems-sccm-2012-r2-sp1/ When we deploy our Windows 10 image (1511 Education), we prompt for a computer name (stored in the OSDComputerName variable), however when the OSD TS completes, the machine is named WIN-XXXXXXXXX. I’ve examine the smsts.log file and can see the correct computer name listed within it and it applying to the unattend.xml file [updated C:\WINDOWS\panther\unattend\unattend.xml with OSDComputerName=13-0908-QGT204 (value was 13-0908-QGT204)]. We use the unattend.xml file to apply UK setting (language, keyboard, etc.) to our build. I then removed the “Use an unattended or Sysprep answer file for a custom installation” option from the “Apply Operating System Image” and redeployed the image again. This time the task sequence worked correctly and gave the computer the correct name. Within the xml file I can see <ComputerName></ComputerName> under the “component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup"” section, which, I assume, is where the task sequence would update the name – in fact there are two entries, one for x86 and one for amd64 (we only use 64bit) – would this be the issue? Any thoughts or advice is welcome J Thanks, Jono
  2. Hello all, hopefully you can help solving this issue that's bugging me for quite a time. When we're deploying new computers, or computers that are not in the sccm database, we use the OsdComputername variable to name the computer, it's working well but when I'm looking for the logs in the console under system status> advertisment status the default computer name (minint-xxx) appears in the system column instead of the given name, until the task "Setup windows and ConfigMgr" has completed (and still the new name is displayed only for the "Software Distribution" component. here is a screenshot of what I see, it's not really important for 1 or 2 computer but when we're deploying 100 at the same time it's impossible to troubleshoot. https://skydrive.liv...3E677D04EA!5652 so how could we have the name we had specified in the osdcomputername variable at the start of the task sequence displayed in the "system" name in the status messages report? I know there is the the _SMSTSMachineName buit in variable but i'm sure how I can use that in my task sequence. thanks
  3. I am moving from WDS to SCCM 2012 for OSD. I have the image ready and deploys very nicely. The one thing that we need to do is, change the computer name based on the serial number. We set all of our names with the asset tag in the name. We have a DB that we scan all Serials, Asset Tags, Computer Name in. For example: Asset Tag: XXXXX Serial Number: 123456 Would have a computer name: LC0D401TO1XXXXX When using WDS we did this after the OS was installed using a bat file (code below). Now when doing this in SCCM 2012, the name either will not change or the computer will be deleted from the domain. Any help would be great!! set newMN= cscript.exe \\file_Location\inventory-sn.vbs //nologo %computername%>c:\install\machsn.txt FOR /f %%p IN (c:\install\machsn.txt) DO SET machisn=%%p find /c /i ",%machisn%," \\file_location\MNs.txt FOR /f "tokens=1,2,3 delims=," %%q in ('findstr /s %machisn% \\File_Location\MNs.txt') DO SET newMN=%%s SET MACHNAME=%newMN% NETDOM RENAMECOMPUTER %newMN% /NewName:%MACHNAME% /userD:domain\user /PasswordD:**** /FORCE
  4. Hi All, I was wondering what the best approach would be to assign multiple machines each with their own unique computer name during my deployment. I have been given the responsibility to deploy about 100 computers in an environment and needed to assign different computer names to each machine. Currently I have a setup using MDT for the actual deployment and WDS that is used for the PXE boot. Is there a way (preferable without using a PowerShell script) that I can deploy these machines? The reason I say preferably without PowerShell script is because I'm a rookie with scripting. If there is any other way to do this, please let me know! Thanks for any help you guys can provide! -Mehrdad
  5. Hi guys.. I use thick images at my workplace because we don't have the infrastructure to do wds, lite or zt installs.. we've been using ghost forever I am trying to have windows 8 ask me for a computer name and join a specified domain.. the way i did it before was using MySysprep2 with the variables <computer>% input pc name%</computer> on my unattended, but it looks like MSP2 does not work with windows 8 .. does anyone have an alternative that will allow me to input the pc name before joining an existing domain? needless to say i also have this on my xml file: <component name="Microsoft-Windows-UnattendedJoin" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <Identification> <Credentials> <Domain>student.local</Domain> <Password>something</Password> <Username>domainjoinaccount</Username> </Credentials> <JoinDomain>student.local</JoinDomain> <MachineObjectOU>OU=WorkStations,DC=STUDENT,DC=LOCAL</MachineObjectOU> <DebugJoin>true</DebugJoin> </Identification> thank you for your time.
  6. Hello, Anyone really figure out during Windows 7 sysprep to be prompted for a computer name and have it join your domain? I can have the machine stop and prompt for machine name but won't join domain. I used My Sysprep Tool, but don't trust it and typing in your password is in clear text, but it does work. I have tried to delete the line from the xml file but still doesn't prompt for computer name. Anyone have a working XML file to stop and ask for computer name then join it to the domain, while syspreping ?
