How can I deploy Windows 8.1 x64 to the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 using System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager ?

Recommended Posts

Hi Niall,

As always, thank you so much for your guides - it has made SCCM manageable!

I have successfully imaged my surface pro 3 with a new UEFI-based task sequence. The only questions I have are:

1. Do I have my Install applications in the right place: http://i.imgur.com/MdBQdAA.png

2. When I try to

  • Swipe from the Right
  • Select Settings
  • Select Change PC Settings
  • Select Update and Recovery
  • Select Recovery

I can't choose either option "refresh your pc without affecting your files" or "remove everything and reinstall windows"

My boss wants these features working in our image. Do you by chance have anything written up on how to make these work again?

Please and thank you again!!!

Tom

Niall,

Thanks for your help on this. Your Virtual academy videos were extremely helpful.

I think what I need, in order for it to keep the custom installs after the base .wim has been applied, is a way to capture the image after the task sequence is 99% complete that will save the image to the recovery partition for use in the "update and recovery"

Has no one else asked for something like this? Should I just tell my boss we can just reimage the surfaces?

Tom

i've not tried it but i'm sure it's doable, i've also not heard of anyone doing it so yes perhaps you should suggest a standard refresh as I've explained in the post below (which retains all data but reinstalls the os)

can someone pls help me with updating firmware/drivers on already deployed SP3s?
i followed the instructions from http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2013/05/16/deploying-drivers-and-firmware-to-surface-pro.aspx#pi36647=2

What i've done so far in SCCM 2012r2 is:

* I made a package

Package properties
Data Source tab:
-This package contains source files \\sccm\sources\...

* Then created program with following settings:
General tab:
- Command line: Powershell.exe -executionpolicy Bypass -file .\InstallDrivers.ps1
- Run: Normal
- After Running: no action

Environment tab:
- Program can run: Only when a user is logged on;
- Run Mode: Run with administrative rights;
- Ticked: Allow users to interact with this program;
- Drive mode: Runs with UNC name;

Advanced tab:
- Run once for the computer
- Ticked: Suppress program notifications

* Distributed Content into DP;

* Deployed to existing test collection;

* Deployment settings: Action:Install; Purpose: Available

When i run it from Software Centre on the client i'm getting following errors:

Injecting driver HDXMSSExtDsp.inf
pnputil : The term 'pnputil' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet,
function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or
if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

+ pnputil -i -a $file.FullName
+ ~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (pnputil:String) [], CommandNotF
oundException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException

Injecting driver RtsUStor.inf

Press Enter to continue

BTW, if i run it manually on SP3 -outside SCCM all is running seamlessly.

could you please give me a hint what im doing wrong?

Thanks

the hint is in the error message

+ pnputil -i -a $file.FullName
+ ~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (pnputil:String) [], CommandNotF
oundException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException

it can't find pnputil

if you are using a 64 bit os (and the SP3 is 64bit) then use

C:\Windows\Sysnative\pnputil.exe as the path

cheers

niall
