is SCCM 2012 R2 schema mandatory?

Recommended Posts

We are Looking to deploy SCCM 2012 R2 onto a Windows 2003 domain, to facilitate deployment of Windows 2008 R2 server and also Windows 7 desktops.

Checking compatibility matrices, it shows:

1) SCCM 2012 is ok on a Windows 2003 domain

2) SCCM 2012 requires a minimum of Server 2008 (We'll be opting for 2008 R2).

Question:

There's a "schema update for SCCM 2012" ... is this "optional" and will provide "non-core benefits", or is it mandatory schema update??

Thanks in advance guys.
