MDT 2013 - USB NIC stops being detected after a reboot?

Question

Hi everyone! So, I've got a really weird issue, that seems to have just showed up recently in our MDT setup. We image a large variety of Windows tablets, both Windows 7 & 8.1. I've always used a USB hub with a USB NIC (Linksys USB300M, and USB3GIG). It's always worked well - WinPE drivers work great, unit images properly, boots into OS and installs software, joins domain, etc.

However, as of last week, we started to notice an issue. During the OSD, it reboots several times during the application installs (as we install several applications during OSD), and also reboots after domain-join. Sometimes after domain-join, and sometimes a few steps before domain-join, the USB NIC is no longer detected in Device Manager. Not like it's there, and the drivers are missing - the device itself is no longer detected. Unplug/replug, switch ports, etc. - no effect. If I put another one in, no effect. If I put in a different model NIC, it then installs it & moves on to finish the OSD. But the only way around it currently, is to wait for the "cannot contact the network share" messge, switch to the other model NIC, and continue.

I've looked in the log files, and there is nothing in there about the NIC, besides when it hits the "cannot contact the network share" message. And it just started a week or two ago; but we haven't updated anything in MDT before then, for some time.

Does anyone have an idea? Thank you so much!

What happens if you use this different model NIC for the entire install? Just wondering if your USB hub is dying.

Hi! Sorry for the delay in responding. I have tried multiple USB hubs, no effect. It is happening with the Linksys USB3GIG adapters all the time. Every once in a while, it also happens with the Linksys USB300M adapters we have, too. I actually found the chipset (Realtek) drivers from the Realtek website, and this seems to have helped - but with some hardware, the issue still occurs.
