how to stop Cortana from talking during Windows setup

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys,

I am deploying Windows 10 v1703 and wish to get rid of cortana talking through windows setup in my office environment (Cortana during the "Lets get your connected" step of OOBE).

I am referring below article what I  wish to get rid of:

https://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-creators-update-features-cortana-setup-screens

I referred below link but no luck in getting any direction:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/customize/desktop/unattend/changed-answer-file-settings-for-windows-10-build-1703

As usual, any help is highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time for reading this :)

You should be able to add a RunSynchronousCommand to the unattend: cmd /c reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v DisableVoice /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

That is supposed to disable Cortana during setup.

I had the same issue but I found adding the SkipMachineOOBE = True in my unattended xml stopped it from happening.  I know this setting is meant to be deprecated but it still seems to work.

All you have to do is set the following registry key

Quote

Set value "DIsableVoice" under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE to 1 (DWORD) and Cortana will stop talking :-)

Thanks anyweb. I was looking for a way to disable Cortana in windows 10 initial setup but at least with this registry tweak I can mute Cortana. It is great help when imaging multiple computers.

I too second adding that line to your unattend.xml to get rid of it. I had the same issue until that was added.
