SCCM Hierarchy - Assistance needed

Recommended Posts

Basically we have one Primary site and few distribution points on branch sites. Our current version of SCCM is 2012 R2 1710. We do not want to upgrade it to version 2016, we would like to install a new fresh server with SCCM 2016 on it. Question is, is it possible to transfer all of the roles and put it as a primary, after that to decommission the 2012 ? Thanks in advance!:)

I think what you are describing is a 'migration scenario'.  You may want to check out the documentation on that:  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/migration/planning-for-migration

You wouldn't 'transfer roles' -- at least not how I think of a Role in ConfigMgr.  You would be able to migrate data from your 2012 primary, to your Current Branch primary.

We did this, we had MS in for a chalk and talk and they recommended just setting up a new server and moving the things we needed - albeit we didn;t have that many application in there.

So we set it up side by side, setup everything we needed then bsically 'switched' the clients when we were ready (remove site assignment from old SCCM boundary groups/stop client push) then just enable the same on the new server - we could have migrated but MS said that may bring across old problems. Obviously this will be your choice as to which way to do it
