Windows 7 Change computername

Question

Hello,

I am a bit new with the deployment of Windows 7 with SCCM R2 Sp2. I followed the guide, this works great. All went smooth.

Now i want to give the tasksequence to run a command to change the computername. It may pop-up, i don't care. I just want to change it beforce everything is ready and before it joins the domain.

I am NOT using mdt

I hope somebody can help.

With the deployment of xp i have made a script that reads out my wmi info and put this in the sysprep.inf. Very easy en works great.

Thanks

I know your not using MDT but i might as well share this with everyone... sorry.

Tools needed:

=============

1. MDT wizard Editor

2. Scripts:

Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml

Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Scripts.vbs

Attachment: Computername.txt

Attachment: Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml (Modified Version)

Attachment: Media Hook.bmp (reference material)

Procedure:

==========

Phase 1 = Create a Computername Prompt

Phase 2 = Create a NEW Boot Image for the prompt

PHASE 1

-------

1. Create a backup of the following scripts

Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml

Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Scripts.vbs

2. Run MDT Wizard editor

open Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml (Modified Version)

Select Preview tab to see the content

If any changes are to be made go to HTML tab.

Do your changes

Save it

And replace the existing Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml

3. Edit the script ?:\Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Scripts.vbs

with ADDING the following lines contained in the attachment Computername.txt

Save and Exit

4. Go back to MDT Wizard Editor for testing.

Open Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml

Highlight ComputerName

Click Wizard > Test > Run

Note: Make sure that you run the Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\SCCM\Deploy_SCCM_Definition_ENU.xml in the proper directory with all the scripts.

If test is successful proceed to PHASE 2

PHASE 2

-------

Create a new boot image using the wizard

in the Image Option --> Tick "Add Media hook files to enable the Deployment Wizard for this boot media"

Refer to attachment: Mediahook.bmp

And complete the whole bootimage creation process.

Important: You must boot with this image to get prompted for computer name.

Cheers

Ejon
