SCCM 2012 Sporadic Client Installation

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently setup SCCM 2012 using the Unified installer from Microsoft.

I have a simple network with 1 DC and a few servers & workstations, all within the 10.0.30.0/24 subnet.

All servers are Windows 2008 R2, and workstations are a mix of WinXP, 7, and 8.

I have been able to get the client to install on 4 of the machines on my network - all are servers running Windows Server 2008 R2. However, when I attempt to push the client to my remaining Windows Server 2008 R2 or Win XP, Win7, or Win8 boxesit fails.

When I take a look at the C:\Windows\CCMSETUP\ccmsetup.log files the only thing I can find that is interesting is as follows:

<![LOG[site version '5.00.7711.0000' is compatible. Client deployment will continue.]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.552+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="1" thread="232" file="ccmsetup.cpp:289">

<![LOG[Couldn't verify 'C:\Windows\ccmsetup\Silverlight.exe' authenticode signature. Return code 0x800b0003]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.552+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="3" thread="232" file="util.cpp:1270">

<![LOG[File C:\Windows\ccmsetup\Silverlight.exe size is 0.]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.552+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="3" thread="232" file="util.cpp:1280">

<![LOG[A Fallback Status Point has not been specified. Message with STATEID='316' will not be sent.]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.552+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="1" thread="232" file="ccmsetup.cpp:8443">

<![LOG[installFromManifest failed 0x80004005]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.552+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="3" thread="232" file="ccmsetup.cpp:6259">

<![LOG[CcmSetup failed with error code 0x80004005]LOG]!><time="00:35:05.568+240" date="05-21-2012" component="ccmsetup" context="" type="1" thread="1636" file="ccmsetup.cpp:9454">

Could the fact that Silverlight.exe filesize is 0 be causing me the issues, or is this a wild goose chase? I am specifically looking at a Win7 box so I thought that BITS shouldn't be giving me an issue. I can seem to find anything relevant online when searching for "CcmSetup failed with error code 0x80004005"

that's not a good sign indeed, do you have more from the log where it actually tries to copy these files ?

Hello and Thank You, I am back with some more detail:

First of all I am a bit of a newbie to SCCM as an administrator - I have been using it from a packaging and deployment perspective for years.

I recently setup SCCM 2012 using the Unified Installer from Microsoft. I have a very simple network all within the same subnet: 10.0.30.0/24. I only have one SCCM server - LabSCCM. I didn't extend the schema until after SCCM was installed, so I subsequently manually add permissions to the Systems Management (and all children) to the LabSCCM account.

I have configured SCCM 2012 with a Boundary Group based on my Active Directory site - 'SC1'. Active Directory Sites and Services have the subnet 10.0.30.0/24 setup as the 'SC1' site.

When I run the Client Push installation, it succeeded on 4 of my boxes. It continues to fail on the remaining boxes. I always kick it off from the server.

* LabDC Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.11 VM on ESX

* LabSCCM Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.12 Client Installed VM on ESX

* LabLic01 Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.13 VM on ESX

* LabAppV Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.15 VM on ESX

* LabXenApp Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.16 Client Installed VM on ESX

* LabFS Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.17 Client Installed VM on ESX

* LabVirHost Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.20 Client Installed Phy (HyperV)

* LabFNMP Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.21 VM on HyperV

* LabDB Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.22 VM on HyperV

* LabFNMEA Server 2008 R2 10.0.30.23 VM on HyperV

* LabWin02 Windows 7 x64 10.0.30.30 VM on HyperV

* LabWin03 Windows 8 10.0.30.31 VM on HyperV

* LabWin04 Windows XP 10.0.30.32 VM on HyperV

'Windows Firewall' is disabled on each machine, and the accounts used for 'Client Push' (svc_sccm and svc_sccmPush) are 'Domain Admins'. The 'Administrators' group on each machine has 'Domain Admins' within it. I have verified that I can access the \\MachineName\ADMIN$ share on each machine with the svc_sccm account.

I can "ping" and "ping -a" all of the machines from LabSCCM.

I have also noticed that the filesize of a few files in the SCCM Client package directory on the server are 0: (Would this be an issue?). Note that I am using the default SCCM Client package source - except that I downloaded a few files to compensate for the 0 KB sized files as indicated below (and I updated DPs with the new source).

* client.msi - 29,908 KB

* microsoftpolicyplatformsetup.msi - 2,216 KB

* msrdcoob_amd64.exe - 0 KB

* msxml6_x64.msi - 2,603 KB

* vc50727_x64.exe - 3,102 KB

* vcredist_x64.exe - 5,103 KB

* wic_x64_enu.exe - 0 KB (renamed to wic_x64_enu.old and downloaded new version - 1,867 KB)

* windowsfirewallconfigurationprovider.msi - 589 KB

* WindowsUpdateAgendt30-x64.exe - 0KB (renamed to WindowsUpdateAgendt30-x64.exe .old and downloaded new version - 7,569 KB)

There is no client.msi.log file in the 'C:\Windows\ccmsetup' folder.

The CCMSETUP.LOG file looks like this:

I have no idea where to go from here - I am completely lost!

I suspect that there are probably a few issues going on here, but I don't know where to start.

* The filesize of the prereqs being 0KB

* Permission issues

- The LabSCCM account does not have permissions to something?

- The svc_sccm or svc_sccmPush accounts do not have permission to something?

* Boundary Group/Active Directory Sites and Services Issues?

* Management Point Issues?

* Silverlight.exe size being 0 - if so, where do I get silverlight and where do I put it?

* BITS?

Alrighty, I have specifics for the solution - the issue was with the SCCM Prereqs and zero KB sized files in the SCCM client installation directory:

I've actually confirmed from a few different co-workers with labs that when they ran the Microsoft Private Cloud Unified Installer for SCCM there were a bunch of 0 KB files in the Client install directory on the server. I thought that the unified installer would have run setupdl.exe - not sure if there is a problem with the unified installer or if several of us independantly made the same error.

By running setupdl.exe in the bin\x64 file (of the SCCM install source directory) I was able to get non-zero versions of the 0 KB files I had in the Client install directory. I then copied the non-zero KB files into the Client install directory, Updated Distribution points, and redeployed the client - everything worked perfectly.

I wasn't having issues with some clients because the prereqs were already installed.

Thank You!
