using System Center 2012 Configuration Manager - Part 9. Deploying Monthly Updates

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Need your help, when I check my WSUS Server it's already downloaded the necessary updates but when I check my SCCM console and run Synchronize Software Updates, it won't sync the updates with my WSUS.

My setup is my primary SCCM server is my WSUS too.

When I tried to execute the script I got the following error:

File C:\temp\CreateFoldersAndCollections.ps1 cannot be loaded. The file C:\temp\CreateFoldersAndCollections.ps1 is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details..

Any suggestions?

Set the execution policy to remotesigned. If you downloaded the file directly to c:\temp... copy this file again locally to another file.

Greeting ,

First of all great tutorial

I have 2 questions :

a) I've created an ADR for Windows 8 starting from 9.7.2013. Run it manually today and then checked for Deployment package

Deployment package is there and ADR had no errors

My question: why does my Windows 8 deployment folder in c:\Sources \ Windows 8 is empty ? My Endpoint ADR folder from the same location is populated with updates .

My Endpoint ADR is set to run every morning from 9 AM so files from ENDPOINT folder have the date 9:05 AM

Why the same thing is not happening to my Windows 8 folder? Do I have to wait for the ADR to run on July 9 ?

B) I don't have any Windows 8 SUG , End Point SUG is there since 9:04 AM this morning.

I am in the dark , please advice .

Thanks guys

First of all, thanks for the awesome guides.

How does one change the frequency of the update deployment enforcement messages, from looking at technet it suggests that this should fall under state messaging which is set to 15 minutes but doesn't seem to be updating often

For the purposes of SCIENCE I upped the frequency of Update scanning and revaluation to 10 minutes but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Ideally I'd like this to update regularly 10-15 mins, so someone can baby sit the status of the the deployment to a large set of servers whilst keeping an eye on monitoring as well.

EDIT: Right, answered my own question.

"Although you can specify an interval of less than 1 day, Configuration Manager will automatically default to 1 day."

Which is a bit subpar for the purposes I wanted - ie monitoring deployment on servers rather than "whenever" of desktops.

hi

you really should raise NEW posts when you have questions like this instead of tacking on your questions onto the end of a 'related' thread

but to your question, those 'missing' updates are missing because the client needs them, therefore is the client computer in a collection that is targetted with those missing updates ? if not, then create a SUG with those updates and deploy it to a collection that contains these computers.

This tutorial seemed to skip right over the "Download Location" settings. While most of the topics that have come up in the many replies to this tutorial have referenced best practices, I think I have a more basic problem.

My SCCM servers do not have direct Internet access.

I have managed to configure the SUP to sync the updates catalog with an upstream WSUS server. However, when configuring deployments, I am requested to provide the location from which SCCM can actually download those updates. Without direct Internet access, I can't download those updates from Microsoft. I am left with specifying a network share. So where can I point the deployment? Is there a folder on the upstream WSUS server that contains the installable update files? (\WSUS\WSUSContent?) Can I just share that folder and point SCCM to it?

Thanks.

Hi Bill,

Did you find out the answer to your question?

Hello everyone,

I configure a primary server and a secondary server thanks to your post, but I am getting the following error in the wsyncmgr.log

warning: ignoring sync request because there is no active WSUS server configured.

I know that I configured it in the primary server but didn't on the secondary, I don't have a CAS server, i am only using primary and secondary.

do i need to configure sup and wsus on the secondary as well?

Thanks.

Hi Anyweb,

Thanks for the great tutorials. They have been very helpful for me when planning (and now implementing) my SCCM 2012 deployment.

I had one question regarding this tutorial. In your post, you say we need to disable the original ADR after creating it. That's fine, and is what I've done, but I'm curious as to why we can't just delete the original ADR instead of disabling it ? Being a new install, I'm trying to keep the console as clean & clutter free as possible, so if I can delete the ADR instead of disabling it without any negative effect, it would be the preferred option.

I have read here someone asking the same question, however I would like to hear your opinion on the matter, if you have time :)

Thanks,

Rumpole

hi, i've amended that statement, you can go ahead and delete the ADR's if you wish, the only reason you'd want to disable them rather than delete is to see what you've created previously, once it's deleted you can't do that.

Hello everyone,

I'm currently having a headache with SCUP. We used to have SCCM 2007 with WSUS (not SCUP) which was working fine until both server crash. I then decided to follow your guide on how to install SCCM 2012 with SCUP. All my ADR rules work great, the package get new update, they get update on the DP.

My configuration is a standalone Primary Server with all the required role on it, running SCCM 2012 SP1, Server 2012 standard and SQL Server 2012 SP1 Enterprise.

Now, what I don't get is my package was updated yesterday with new updates (both windows 7 updates and endpoint updates). But when I run windows update or software center, there's nothing in it. The first update I saw was 2 minutes ago on my SCCM server and it was for an outdated endpoint update (it downloaded the 1.155.1661.0 definition while the 1.155.1705.0 is available).

All the updates are into a group and package, and those packages are on collection. I've checked and my computer are in that collection.

Is there anyway to solve that?

Can we use both wsus and scup on the server? If I understand now, updates will now be "software" from the software center and not from windows update, right? Can I use windows update for, well, windows update and use SCUP for the reste (real software like quicktime updates, flash updates, etc...)? I feel WSUS was working better then SCUP, unless I don't get the concep.

Also, is there a way to get rid of replaced update?

Thanks

Update:

A little patient and it worked.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had configured my environment according to this guide.

SCCM server with WSUS installed. Standalone environment.

- It sync with Microsoft update server and downloaded correctly.

- When ADR runs, it downloads and create the package correctly.

- According to the report, Scan was completed successfully on the client running windows 7.

- States for a deployment and computer report also shows all necessary information correctly.

- checked local gpo and it's been pointed correctly to the sccm2012 server by the SCCM agent.

- Application was deployed to the machine and installed successfully.

However, when I run Software Centre, I do not see any software been published nor can I click on anything to install it.

Is there anything I did wrong or can I check? Thanks heaps.

Still not working for me... When I open software center, nothing in it. Forefront does get updated, but windows doesn't get any patch.

Can I use Wsus to push windows update and SCUP to push software? I saw that in Wsus console, all computer are accounted for.

What's weird is SCUP work since I'm able to push applications.

Which log do you want, because there's quite a lot of logs?

Hello...

First off, thanks for all the work you do in putting together these tutorials. They have sincerely helped a noob like myself trying to migrate from 2007 and administer 2012.

Sadly, I can't really even get going on this part because the script doesn't seem to be doing anything for me. I've followed the steps to a tee and the script kicks off and runs without any kind of errors. However, when I open the console, I still don't have any folders created. I will say that I jumped ahead at some point during all this and started syncing updates a while back. As such, I already have a boatload of updates showing up under "All Software Updates." Could that cause an issue with the folders not being created?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

are you sure you are looking in the right part of the console ? have you tried refreshing the view ? i've just rechecked the script on a Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 primary and the collections appeared after I refreshed the console after the script ran.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Unfortunately, I am looking in the right place and have tried refreshing several times. I've even tried re-running the script. Again, it runs without errors, but it does provide different information. I'm not great at reading and understanding scripts, but with the first run, I could tell where it was creating/moving folders and setting collections and maintenance windows. On subsequent runs, it's just performing "Get" commands. It's acting as if the folders do, in fact, exist. But, I don't understand why I don't see them... :/ See screens below.

Hi Anyweb,

I did follow exactly your guide and created two ADRs and I disabled the first ADR and run the second ADR like your guide. But it does not work. I cannot see any update in my Window Update directory and I saw in my logfile "ruleengine.log" and found no errors. Here is my log:

Hi,

I have created all the collections, ADR etc. as described above. But every month, I get on a lot of my workstations "downloading 0% complete". When i look further, i see that deployment package shows an error on the DP content status: error: the source folder for content does not exist".

When i run the ADR, the folder for example Win7 is created and Inside i see updates.. But after sometimes, this folder seems to disappear... So when the clients try to update, there is no source.

Do you have any idea? What can i do wrong??

I've noticed the same thing happens for my endpoint protection updates, except that since this is applied right away everyday, i don't get any error. But the folder containing the updates is also "deleted" when i look in the source folder...

Thx a lot for your help, i'm really getting crazy about this!

Olivier
