Import computer association

Question

Hi all

One question about computer association

Is it possible to add computers with computer association based on asset tag

At our company it is not possible to add computers with mac address or simbios guuid simply because we don't have this information

But for all these computers we do have the asset tag

I hope someone has a solution for this

Thx

J

you can get the MAC address by simply pinging the computer and then arp'ing it

eg:

U:\>ping xp1002

Pinging xp1002.windows-noob.com [94.75.228.161] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 94.75.228.161: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 94.75.228.161: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 94.75.228.161: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 94.75.228.161: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 94.75.228.161:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

U:\>arp -a

Interface: 94.75.228.161 --- 0x2

Internet Address Physical Address Type

94.75.228.161 00-23-ae-00-62-d7 dynamic

so now you have the MAC address ( 00-23-ae-00-62-d7 ) of the computer and you already know its computername....

does that help ?

Hi

I know how to check for the mac adress

But the problem I have is that my servervice desk staff want to add the computers wih computer association

We don't have the mac adresses available on forehand we do have the asset tags of all these computer

And I was wondering if it is possible to import the computers with computer association option asset tag

Maybe we need to add something in the dabase so that we have this option inside computer association

I hope someone has had the same issue and knows a sollution for this

Hello,

I do not know even if it's possible to extend the database so you should maybe look for another solution. I will still lay my vote on another solution and do what anyweb say's cuz to it's very easy to do.

1. Make shure that you have enabled hardware invetory and that all computers has reported information to your site.

2. Create a web report with three columns, the first one will show computer name, the other one will show GUID and the third MAC address. If you not know how to do that i recomend you to reqeust a report in this section on the forum.

3. Import your webreport to Excel and format it to the standard that must be used to import computers from file.

4. Done

If you already have hardware inventory enabled and fallowed anywebs instructions you should be able to do this under 60 minutes.

Good luck!

But the problem I have is with the installation of new computers

I've created the PXE point and everything works perfect

But the problem is for the new computers I do not have the mac adres but only the asset tag of these computers

Maybe someone has another solution for this , I hope so

If you buy your computers directly from the manufacturer or rentthem, so can they easily pick out the MAC address through its asset register cuz I can almost garantee you that they have one.

Send an email to their support and request a list, it never hurts to ask:)
