This was actually an easier fix than I had originally thought. I ran into this just like OP. I had a modified CM client running within the Windows XP Task Sequence. Once I put this back to the default (upgraded) CM Client in the task sequence. I never received the Protected Item message. There must have been some communication issues between the new WinPE and the old client.
