We need to do a Windows 7 to Windows 7 migration. We are doing a hardware refresh and want to give users a new laptop/desktop and preserve their settings using USMT. I have read this thread and there is a ton of stuff here. I also read this. I have imported the Side by Side Migration task sequence from ANYWEB where can I download this same task sequence for CM2012?
And is there a basic how-to on doing a side-by-side? Something that covers all the steps? or is it just a hodge-podge of links you have to sift through? Thanks.

Our CM2012 OSD works for all of our Dell hardware except the Dell E6420 laptop. In have two E6420's at my desk and both fail in the same way at the same time. You PXE boot up and it prompts you for the DP password. Then it prompts you to choose a TS. We only have one TS so I pick that and it does resolve all packages. But then it does on the 3rd step within the TS. "Use Toolkit Package" This is our MDT toolkit package that works on all Dell hardware except this E6420.
Here is part of the SMSTS.LOG
I know this package is there and it does work since all other hardware uses it. Why would it not work only on this one type of hardware?

I read another thread and the answer was.
Hi,
If you already have a properly configured reference machine, then yes, you could/should skip this step. This Build phase is there to help you create and configure the reference machine in a guided, automated way. If for any reason you never have to make this first step (let's say you receive the image 'ready' from another team), then of course, you would skip it.
I tried this. I have a generic Windows 7 install that is on a VM. I created a new Task Sequence that only has the following steps.
Restart in Windows PE
Prepare Configuration Manager client
Prepare OS
Capture the Reference Computer
this fails with the following errors.

NO MATTER WHAT I DO THE OS INSTALLS TO D:\WINDOWS
windows-Noob web page http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6353-using-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-part-7-build-and-capture-windows-7-x64-sp1/ I've done this and it does not work.
I have watched YouTube video's and nothing I do works.
All I want to do is create a .WIM image that I can then Deploy via MDT/UDI to our environment. If the INSTALL.WIM that ships with Windows 7 defaults to D:\ then why even put it in there? What use is it?
When I create my CM2012 Build & Capture Task Sequence I only have 1 option which is to Use "IMAGE PACKAGE" Which only allows you to use a .WIM file and from what I've read you are supposed to grab the .WIM from the Windows 7 soruce CD. But that does not work since it defaults to D:\Windows. So how do you do this?I need to have a WIM image that I can then deploy using MDT/UDI but it seems impossible to create a build and capture WIM.
I did all of this in SCCM 2007 no probably, in fact it took about 4 hours to get it all done and working. What is so secret about CM2012?

It was an anti-virus policy that prevented this. so it is fixed.
-
I removed my machines from the domain and I still can't copy a .SCR file to my hard drive. so it is not any policy or login script. Something changed in the registry or local security. and speaking of local security I did not find anything in the Local Security Policy.
-
I am posting this here since I did not know where to post this. And I know there are some smart people on this site so here goes.....
We have windows XP machines. I am not able to copy a .SCR file to the c:\windows\system32 folder or anyplace on the drive, not even c:\Temp. No matter what I do I can't. I've tried the following.
Rename the file to SC.SC1
copy sc.sc1 to c:\windows\system32 (this works)
ren sc.sc1 sc.scr fails.
error renaming file or folder
cannot rename sc.sc1: access is denied
make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file si not currently in use.
I have tried pushing out sc.scr using SCCM 2007 which runs in the System Account. That fails
I have tried pushing out a .CMD file using SCCM 2007. This .CMD file has the following
ECHO OFF
copy %~dp0*sc.sc1 "c:\windows\system32" /y
c:
cd\
cd windows\system32
ren sc.sc1 sc.scr
This fails too.
I have taken my XP machine and placed it into it's own OU within AD. I have blocked all other GPO's from running. I have logged into this XP machine as an Admin and run GPRESULTS /Z NO GPO'S ARE BEING APPLIED !! Yet I still can't rename this file.
I CAN copy other files to C:\windows\system32. I can create Foldes there I can create .TXT files. I can actually create or copy .EXE files to C:\windows\system32, just not .SCR files.I checked to see if it was Firewalls or McAfee and it is not.
What can prevent this? is it a REG key? if so which one? -
I need to create an interactive deployment for Windows 7. I have a CM2012 server that has MDT 2013 installed. I played with UDI but it does not give us the ability to create custom menu's. I read on the Internet that MDT 2013 has a custom HTA tool? Does anyone have examples of that process?

How does WinPE and PowerShell handled calls to AD? I use the Quest AD CMDLET's which of course would not work in WinPE. But to run GET-ADUser or GET-ADComputer in WinPE don't you need all of the RSAT tools?
-
On another forum someone said powershell is not really good for task sequences due to the .Net Framework. It was a bit unclear is reason. But I wanted to ask this board. Is there any reason you would "Not" use PowerShell for your .HTA tool in a cm2012 task sequence?
-
Thank you. one more quick question for you. How about using PrimalScript? I've played with it a little and it works good with PowerShell. If I wrote a PrimalScript / PowerShell GUI could I then pass my variables into a CM2012 Task Sequence?
Thanks again for your help.

I found the HTA tool on this site but I wanted to know if there are any HTA style tools that are written in PowerShell. I know PS a little but and I wanted to create a custom HTA for a Windows 7 OSD using CM2012.
And if not can I use a PowerShell front end with CM2012 OSD? I can create prompts and query AD with PS so it would make my life easier.
Thanks.

Yes, we can now assume that :-) But I added the SELECT and it does return many machines, all of which are showing as Live Clients. They have a site code, are approved, are assigned and client=Yes. If this code should show machines that are not active in AD how come they all show up as healthy SCCM clients?

I saw some old collection query code from SMS 2003, it does not work when I drop it into a SCCM 2007 collection. I looked at the code and I did not find all the matching data. Here is the code:
SMS_R_System.ResourceID,SMS_R_System.ResourceType,SMS_R_System.Name,SMS_R_System.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_System.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_System.Client from SMS_R_System where Name in (select Name from SMS_R_System where ((DATEDIFF(day, SMS_R_SYSTEM.AgentTime, getdate()) >=15) and AgentName = "SMS_AD_SYSTEM_DISCOVERY_AGENT")) and Name in (select Name from SMS_R_System where ((DATEDIFF(day, SMS_R_SYSTEM.AgentTime, getdate()) >=45) and AgentName = "Heartbeat Discovery"))
This is supposed to populate a collection with machines that have not been active in AD for 15 days. What I'm trying to figure out is how to identify broken clients in SCCM 2007. I know SCCM reads AD each night and finds all kinds of machines that are no longer alive. So this code above would be great but how do I code this for a SCCM 2007 collection?

Does anyone have a powershell script that removes an SCCM 2007 server role? We need to remove a role on 60 primary & secondary site servers and don't want to manually do it.
-
I've read that for SCCM 2012 to work you Don't need WebDAV. Correct?
Also, on this site I did read the required IIS settings you need to check. Are all of these truly needed or can you omit some of them? Like IIS management scripts and tools. Is that a mandatory requirement or a "nice to have"?
What ones are mandatory and which are the "nice to haves"?
Thank you.

I am trying to install SCCM 2012. I kick off the splash.hta and run Install. I answer all of the question and then I get to the SQL dialog. Our SQL server is on a different box and it is running the following.
SQL Server 2008 R2
Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
When I’m on the “database information” dialog I have tried to enter both the SQL server name and the IP address, and I get two totally different errros.
If I enter the computer name of the SQL server I get this error:
Configuration manager sites require a support SQL server version with required hotfixes for site database operations to succeed.
But if I enter the IP address I get this error:
Setup is unable to connect to SQL server with the connection information provided.
1) Why the different errors?
2) What hotfixes do I need to make this work?
Thanks.

If you remove and re-add the Management Point Role does that break anything in your environmment? We have 1 MP that does not work. It starts and stops and then will not restart. If I remove and re-add the role is it as simpple as that? or do I need to remove every package from that DP first?
Our MP has this in error in the logs.

So something is going on. We found this out because we can't do any package deployments on this site. In fact clients don't even get the adverts. so once we began to dig we ended up at this error.
Any help/hints would be great.
