Different Collections For versions of Windows

Recommended Posts

I am trying to create an auto deployment rule for my windows servers, but because I have 2003/2008/2012 the software package/auto deployment rule exceeds the 1000 update limits. So I want to create different collections within my server collection for each version of windows and create auto deployment rules for each collection. I don't know how to figure out what servers have what version of windows. Can someone guide me in the right direction to create a query to assign the right server to the right collection group?

You can click the queries together in the Criteria tab and you will get something like this (for Server 2012): select * from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM on SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Version like "%6.2%" and SMS_G_System_OPERATING_SYSTEM.Name like "%Server%"

Also you don't need to split up you collections, as the client will only install updates that it needs (and are relevant).
