  1. OK thanks. The error message I'm currently getting says I can specify a UNC path, even though it then further states I can't use the "\" character. A remote database is fairly standard practice and supported by Microsoft. Why isn't it recommended?
  2. It seems that installation step-by-step instructions don't address what's involved with configuring SCCM with a remote SQL server (fairly straight forward I guess). But during the installation, the Database Information section requests a path for the SQL Server data file and log file, defaulting to a mapped drive that doesn't exist. My SQL server folder paths aren't shared and the installation doesn't like "\\SQL1\d$\data" due to the character. It makes me wonder why this information is even needed. So: Does ConfigMgr actually need to know the path to the SQL data and log files? If so, why? If not, can I just leave the dummy default paths? If I have to share the data/log paths, is it just the SCCM service account that needs access or do other accounts need to know this path?
  3. Cool, thanks for replying.
  4. We currently have a standalone primary SCCM 2012 SP CU3 site that has become problematic and flaky for a while and needs to be rebuilt. I intend to build a new server with SCCM 2012 R2 and migrate all the applications, task sequences etc. What's the simplest / most painless way of achieving this? Should I build the new server with a new site code, copy across apps etc and then incrementally move subnets/physical sites and DPs, or; Expand the existing primary site and install a CAS, then add the new SCCM server as an additional primary site. After the migration, remove the old primary site and then the CAS. Or is there simpler alternative? Thanks
  5. After upgrading SCCM 2012 RTM to SP1 CU3, my OSD task sequences no longer installs any applications after the OS. Win7 installs with all drivers, PC is added to the domain and the correct ConfgMgr client is installed with a healthy connection to SCCM. However the C:\_SMSTaskSequence folder remains with the 7GB WIM file and none of the 12x applications installed. Network Access Account has with domain admin permissions. 6. I have a single corporate domain with 2x DCs (svr 2008R2) and want to create a new domain to contain kiosk and training room PCs that will be used by the public. I want the kiosk domain to be managed by the corporate domain's SCCM 2012 and to receive software updates, new applications and deployments. Security is obviously a big concern; the kiosk machines will be heavily locked down with group policies, scripts etc. Is it better from a security perspective to have the kiosk domain in a different forest or does a child domain suffice?
  7. I suddenly have a Chrome package/app showing up in Software Centre that fails to install. I've gone through all of my packages and applications in ConfigMgr and it doesn't exist. I checked my PC \ccmcache folder and located the source files. These source files don't exist on the server. I find the app's ContentID in AppDiscovery.log and, on the SCCM server, trace through \SCCMContentLib to find the PackageID and install files. Going by the ID number this is an old version that was discarded up to a year ago. It doesn't exist in ConfigMgr but does on the distribution points and is showing up in the client's Software Centre. Under these circumstances, how do I completely remove it from the system? Some kind of manual distribution point cleanup?
  8. OK, so I switched on the old DP server, manually uninstalled all roles / features and left overnight. Come in this morning and SCCM console shows that the Component Server Role has disappeared from this DP. I can now remove it from the Servers and Sites System Roles view. Solved.
  9. In my SCCM 2012 config, I have 3x distribution points that are no longer active and I need to remove them from the config. I've read that I need to remove the roles before deletion but the Component Server and Site System have "Remove Role" greyed out. I can't find the solution to this on Google but it must be fairly straight forward (must be). If need be I can switch the old DP servers back on. Any ideas greatly appreciated, thanks.
  10. I thought I'd try a Powershell script that adds the current user to the Local Admins group, then installs the TRIM .msi file. As thus: $cname = $env:computername $localmachine = "$cname/" + "Administrators" $uname = $env:username $currentuser = "domain/" + "$uname" [ADSI]$user="WinNT://$currentuser,User" [ADSI]$LocalAdmin="WinNT://$localmachine,group" $LocalAdmin.Add($user.Path) I figured that if it was deployed from SCCM it would run under the SYSTEM account. It came up with an Access Denied error though. Any ideas on how I could get this working?
  11. Hi all, I need to an deploy an application (HP TRIM 7.1) to all Win7 x64 PCs that must install for the user, not system. However, it seems that TRIM can only install if the user is a local administrator. Management is adamant that noone is to be a local admin to any PC which makes it a bit difficult. Are there any settings in SCCM 2012 that can elevate a standard Windows account momentarily for an app installation? If not, can this be done through a script? I don't know anything about TRIM, just that it deploys for local admins but not std users.
  12. Cool, that worked, just had to research how to add the step into my TS. Thanks for the help.
  13. I have built a basic task sequence in SCCM to boot from PXE, run USMT to migrate PCs running XP to Win7, and install a handful of applications. All items run to completion and user profiles migrate successfully. However, even though all previously installed application files are wiped from the C: drive, entries are still left in the Start menus that are either empty folders or .lnk files that point to nowhere. That is, the Start menu is full of legacy junk that doesn't work. I attempted to put the following command line at the beginning of the TS to be executed in WinPE: RmDir "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" /s /q This returned a message about the path/files not being found although it does work fine when run from Windows. There doesn't seem to be anything I can find on Google about this. Any hints muchly appreciated.
