For the manual install of the client, out of the three msi packages in the mdop 2012 iso>appv>installers>5.0>Client folder, just run appv_client_setup and this will install the client. Running the client individually manually will keep giving you the kick back error message. the appv_client_MSI_x64 and x86 are for group policy push outs and a reference install for appv_client_setup.
