Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 client install taking hours to install

Hi all, I've installed a new 2012 Configuration Manger 2012 with Sp1 into my 2008 22 native environment. I've followed the guide up to the end of part 5. Great guide!

 

The issue I'm receiving is a large chunk of PCs are taking a long time (4-10 hours) to install the client via Software Update-Based Client Installation. This is not so bad for the end user when it happens in the background but if the end user reboots, their PC will install the client prior to the logon screen. This is very bad.

 

I've applied hotfix 2801987 although I didn't think I needed it since I downloaded cfgmgr 2012 with sp1 from the MVLS site last week. Rebooted my cfgmgr server, (single server with all core roles installed plus the software update point role). I initiated a validation of the client install package and then redeployed the client, knowing this wouldn't help. And of course, it didn't.

 

I've done some searching and have found references to Webdav but I'm also seeing many references to Cfgmgr12 not needing Webdav.

 

Any ideas?

It looks like you are having a network issue (see the recoverable error at the beginning of the log) and you might also have BITS throttling enabled too, hence why it is taking so long to download.

I would check you BITS setting and take a look at the network for what is going on there too.

A local computer policy set the 'limit the maximum network bandwidth for BITS background transfers' to 20kb. Removed the setting and presto, all is working.

 

I created a domain level computer GP to disable the setting sitewide.

 

A great tool (run on the systems with the issue) to help troubleshoot the issues was bitsadmin /list /allusers. This command lists the current BITS jobs, look closely and each job will have a status. For the jobs with error status, more info can be obtained by using the BITS job name and typing bitsadmin /info {job name} > c:\bitsjobinfo.txt.
