  1. if I am using a bootable media (CD) please could you confirm I need only one DP? (I am not using PXE) Thanks, -Dom
  2. I am trying to create an image with Build and Capture for Windows Server 2008 but first I need a boot image working... I am using a HP DC7800 workstations for testing purpose.(2 Gb RAM) I copied the Windows Server 2008 to my CONFIGMGRSRV server in a folder C:\Source Files\Microsoft\Operating Systems\2008\2008 Std. and Ent. Eds. x86 Then from this copy I copied the boot.wim file from C:\Source Files\Microsoft\Operating Systems\2008\2008 Std. and Ent. Eds. x86\sources to \\configmgrsrv\SMS_SRV\OSD\boot\i386 Should I copy other files? I had created a boot image under System Center Configuration Manager > Site database (SRV - CONFIGMGRSRV ...) > Operating System Deployment > Boot Images > Add Boot Image - \\configmgrsrv\SMS_SRV\OSD\boot\i386\boot.wim and it displayed '1 - Microsoft Windows Longhorn WinPE (x86)' I input the name ' xxxx - boot x86 Windows Server 2008', Version 1.0, Comment : '\\configmgrsrv\SMS_SRV\OSD\boot\i386' Then I created an iso file through System Center Configuration Manager > Site database (SRV - CONFIGMGRSRV ...) > Operating System Deployment > Task Sequences > Create Task Sequence Media - Bootable Media - Media File: \\configmgrsrv\SMS_SRV\OSD\boot\i386\boot.iso (is it a good idea to try to differentiate them like boot-w2k08.iso... boot-xp.iso or should they always be boot.iso?) - No password - Boot Image: xxxx - boot x86 Windows Server 2008 DP: \\CONFIGMGRSRV the progress went fine with all green check marks... So I tried to boot the test machine on this CD burned... I am getting an error: All Windows Server 2008 requirements: As I am no more sure where to look I am giving the size of the various files: - (1vista) CD boot.wim for vista: boot-VISTA-O.wim 119,106 Kb - (2vista) boot wim after distribution to the DP: boot-VISTA-O.<<Site name>>xxxx.wim 129,418 Kb - (3vista) iso file created through the TS from (1vista): VISTA-O.iso 156,482 Kb - (1w2k08) CD boot.wim for windows server 2008: boot-W2K08-O.wim 130,189 Kb - (2w2k08) boot wim after distribution to the DP: boot-W2K08-O.<<Site name>>xxxx.wim 140,407 Kb - (3w2k08) iso file created through the TS from (1w2k08): W2K08-O.iso 156,482 Kb I verified all these... let me know what looks wrong: process, file sizes, etc... one stupid question should I make the iso from the boot.wim or the boot.<<site name>>xxxx.wim file? Did the boot.wim files changed from the base to SP1 then SP2? Vista Vista SP1 Vista SP2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 SP1 Windows Server 2008 SP2 Thanks, - Dom
  3. Hi Any, No PXE. I am creating a CD bootimage from the boot.wim of the Windows Server 2008 CDs them create an iso CD with the TS and try to boot from it and it always fails... I did the build and capture for Vista (5 times now) and it works fine but when trying for Windows Server 2008 (up to 12 times) it does not pass the bootimage step it is always failing with tons of errors never the same even when I run twice the same process... the boot.wim from 2007 seems not having all necessary requirements... or an issue with the DC7800 hardware!!! 2 Gb RAM Now I have uploaded the drivers with PEIMG I will check again. same error:.. Thanks, Dom

Then I created an iso file through System Center Configuration Manager > Site database (SRV - CONFIGMGRSRV ...) > Operating System Deployment > Task Sequences > Create Task Sequence Media - Bootable Media - Media File: \\configmgrsrv\SMS_SRV\OSD\boot\i386\boot.iso (is it a good idea to try to differentiate them like boot-w2k08.iso... boot-xp.iso or should they always be boot.iso?) - No password - Boot Image: xxxx - boot x86 Windows Server 2008 DP: \\CONFIGMGRSRV the progress went fine with all green check marks... So I tried to boot the test machine on this CD burned... I am getting an error: Any idea? ** I even tried to create an isoCD from the boot.wim from the Windows Server 2008 CDs without any update... same error... BTW how do I get to the peimg process? I was able to run the PEIMG on the boot.wim but running Peimg /inf=driveletter:\temp\driver\*.inf /image=driveletter:\temp\mount\windows I am getting an error After removing all inf files failing one by one I finally got the PEIMG comand passed sucessfully.. Thanks, - Dom

  7. Any, I see now that the ISO itself is the trouble... No the ISO was still as is not extracted. I have downloanded a Vista ISO and an XP CD now to try again to complete my testing, so Vista is failing as ISO and within 1 minutes Iwill see for XP CD. Everuthing works fine from the CD let me go further now... Thanks, Dom
  8. Hi Any, Sorry I think I was not clear in my question. It works fine with Vista it is the document 569 I am using and if I do the following steps: - Download from MSDN the XP Iso en_windows_xp_profesional_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-80428.iso to a share folder Applications\XP SP3-Iso then i am trying to use it to create a Package... - Add Operating System Install Package - Input \\CONFIGMGRDTS\Applications\XP SP3-Iso for the source directory - Click next and I am getting the error: "The Specified directory does not contain a valid operating system or you do not have permissions to access it" If I try on Applications\Vista (not iso for now) I am able to get the next screen and create the package... it seems I miss some files from the XP CD??? which are use to control the content of the Source Directory??? Thanks, Dom
  9. Hello, I am using again this excellent guide but I am stuck at the beginning this time... "The Specified directory does not contain a valid operating system or you do not have permissions to access it." - Everyone has full access on the share - Eveyone has full control on NTFS The file in the folder is the same as in the example en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-80428.iso if I try from the Vista folder it works... but it was not an iso file ... it is the CD ... Any idea? Thanks

Hello, I was using 569 and 570 topics which are great but when running against my test machine I always get an error: "Failed to Run Task Sequence" An error occured while retrieving policy for this computer (0x80072EE7). For more information, please contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator" Anybody has idea why? Thanks, Dominique
  11. Hello, I am using the excellent document http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=499 but I would like to deploy the packages without showing anything to the end-user. I skipped the "Step3. Advertise the Package" but now I don't have the Collections assigned. Should I do differently? Should I still use the Step3 but how not to show the icon and pop-up to the Clients? Thanks,
  12. Hello, I am using the excellent document in this section "All XP Approved 02/23/2009". In the Section "Create a Patch List" several times now I am not getting the items: - Deployment Package - Download location - Language Section during the creation of the templates... What could be the reason? the screens are missing from the steps and the items does not appear on the left side of the other screens during the process...? Is it security? Is it something else? Is it because we have already used the Search folders for a template? Also what is the purpose of the "Update List"? it doing several times the same steps Deploy and/or doanload the packages? Thanks, Deployment_Software_Update_Items_missing___01.zip

Both child use the Primary Parent Site as upstream server for WSUS/SUP. I have checked: - SUPSetup.log - WCM.log - WSUSCtrl.log - Wsyncmgr.log also http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735874.aspx and nothing is showing errors anywhere... Thanks,
  16. I did it three times now in test and I am ready to proceed in production now. BUT I was not able to populate anything using the "Description" field all my queries are with the "Title" field now. Could I have a wrong character somewhere? the site is in US English only. Thanks,

  18. Hello, We started with a small environment: - 1 DB Server - 1 SCCM Server all clients were pushed from the sccm server and worked fine... Now our infrastructure is changing to: - Parent Site: 1 DB Server (SCCM + WSUS DBs), RSP 1 SCCM Server (SUP, RP, SS, WSUS) - Primary Child Site Server:(800 Servers) 1 SCCM Server (SCCM DB, SS, DP, MP, RP, SUP, WSUS[server + DB] 1 DP (Shared on a Print Server) - Primary Child Site Desktop:(200 Workstations) 1 SCCM Server (SS, DP, MP, RP) 1 DB Server (SCCM DB, WSUS DB, RSP) 1 WSUS Server (SUP) 1 DP (Shared on a Print Server) o 2 DP (Shared on Print Servers) Location 1 (2,000 Workstations) o 2 DP (Shared on Print Servers) Location 2 (3.500 Workstations) o 2 DP (Shared on Print Servers) Location 3 (2,000 Workstations) As previously all Clients were pushed from a unique server, I would like to know how to redirect these clients from their proper sites now which would be the "Primary Child Site Server" & "Primary Child Site Desktop"? Anything to clean on the Clients? How to do it? As we will have two Servers pushing clients ("Primary Child Site Server" & "Primary Child Site Desktop") any specific recommendations about the settings of the primary sites and the multiple Distribution Points (DP) below each Primrary Sites? Thank You _____________________________ Dominique Altiris & System Manager Support 310-267-4489
