  1. Hi All, Can anybody help. Currently trying to build a HP probook 650 with Win7 x86, however I get the following error message during the task sequence, when it is applying system settings "windows could not configure one or more system components, to install windows restart the computer and restart the installation" The only option is to click OK, computer restarts and then the error message reappears. SCCM was building fine and then just stopped working an this error message keeps occurring. Unable to F8 and Shift F10 to get any additional info Please Help Thanks
  2. Hi Everyone Strange problem we seem to be getting - wonder if anyone else has found the same issue... Standard task sequence for deploying Windows 7 x86 and some standard software, used on 7 remote sites each using a local distribution point One site seems to keep failing, on installing a custom application. Same task sequence works on other sites without issue on same make and model of machine Rebuilt the distribution point onto the same hardware, from Svr2008 up to Svr2012R2 - still failed task sequence Built a new DP as a virtual machine for testing - distributed content needed - failed the task sequence Convert the application to a package and it works fine! - but that seems to be a step backwards, and the TS works without issue at all other sites! Anyone have any ideas on what to look at or try? Thanks John
  3. I have posted a guide on my blog that hopefully will be useful. Here is the link. https://buckingthesystemcenter.wordpress.com/
  4. Hello Everyone, I am doing PC OS Refresh (Win7-Win7) from OSD task sequence advertised as Optional in the Software Center, As a first step of task sequence, it launches a HTA which will prompt user consent to continue with re-imaginh. I am facing challenge in HTA appearing on top of all windows. I referred may articles bu helped partially. I don't want to use third party utility becasue of IT policies. I want to minimise the all the application if not at least Software center so that HTA is displayed on top. My HTA is created using VB Script. I have used ModalHTA option bu it gives option to close the HTA without answering the HTA user conset ( ACCEPT/CANCEL). Need breakthrough to solve this. Thanks in Advance.
  5. Hi, I've taken over a Task Sequence that was built by another person, and I am having issues with ALL machines being built by the TS finishing with the name "MINWINPC". Yes, I am kicking the built off using a USB stick (I've read posts that mention this being the case), but correct me if I am wrong, this appears to be if you use USB and deploy to Unknown Computers? So what I am inheriting is an MDT integrated TS in SCCM 2012 R2, which is deployed to a Device Collection as a Required deployment - so I can see if it is correctly resolving the machine MAC address to the device in SCCM 2012 R2 (otherwise it just doesn't build). I've even attempted to chuck in the TS this script - https://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/script-to-prompt-for-system-name-in-sccm-osd/ - to allow for prompting for a new name if MINWINPC is seen, but it quickly skips this step, and I can't see errors in the log. The interesting thing about this TS is that there are multiple PowerShell tasks that are used to download the WIM off the USB (it's been copied to the bootable USB's to save dragging it over the network) and applied using a DISM command in a PowerShell script (i.e. it's a bit different to just selecting the O/S you want to deploy and having it happen). But apart from that, nothing else seems to "out there" in terms of thinking, but I just can't figure out why the object in SCCM gets renamed to MINWINPC, the machine has that name and joins the Domain as that. Now, I can just go through the renaming process after, but that doesn't help if I ever want to build multiple machines at once. Got any ideas of where to look or how to overcome a MINWINPC issue? Thanks MG
  6. What's so great about the MDT / SCCM integration, specifically about task sequences and OS deployment? I understand that using MDT to build an image is preferable for a lot of reasons, and I'm okay with that part. It's the MDT-enabled task sequences that are bothering me. It seems like whenever I need to create an MDT task sequence, I have to bend over backwards, analyze everything in the task sequence created, tweak the defaults, pat my head, and rub my tummy before it will (somewhat) work correctly. Here's my latest example: I needed a fairly simple refresh task sequence to be run on about fifteen computers of a single hardware model. I'm not concerned with preserving any data on them; I just need to format and install Windows, along with a set list of applications. I'd like to use copyprofile as well, so I turned to MDT instead of building my own unattend.xml from scratch. My MDT task sequence is now three times as long as my original "vanilla" task sequence was, contains unneeded variables for BitLocker, UEFI, and the UDI wizard, and it still fails! I get seemingly random 80040005 errors throughout the task sequence with no apparent rhyme or reason (they actually happen in different places in the same task sequence on the same machine) with no output in smsts.log. The SMSTS.log files are now stored in about four different places. In fact, when I create a new MDT task sequence without selecting the UDI wizard and try to run it from within Windows (using the Software Center), it doesn't even restart into Windows PE - I get an error when it tries to partition Windows from within Windows. I'm fairly new to MDT, so it's very possible I'm doing this wrong...but from my perspective, integrating MDT with SCCM has been nothing but a headache. Could anyone explain some of the advantages of using these enhanced task sequences?
  7. Hello, I have a problem with trying to join a domain and name the PC as part of a UDI task sequence using standalone media. The task sequence works just fine when PXE booting, but it will not do either task when using a USB drive. Do the task sequence variables that are set by the UDI somehow get reset before the domain join step when not connected to the SCCM server? If so, is there a way to get around this? Maybe using an unattend.xml file? I would appreciate any insight on this. Thanks. TheWes
  8. Hello, Just letting people know that I have just launched my own SCCM 2012 blog. Since most of the meat of operating system deployment, etc. has been covered by blogs such as this, I am focusing mine on more obscure issues that I have encountered. I only have one post up as of right now, but more are to follow. I hope someone finds it useful. Here is the link. https://buckingthesystemcenter.wordpress.com/ Wes
  9. As the title suggests: I'm looking for guidance on how to wipe the MBR via Task Sequence during an OSD. Any suggestions? We use Symantec Encryption Desktop (aka PGP) and it adds a bootguard to the MBR which needs to be cleared out (we need to wipe the MBR) in order for the machines to boot successfully. If I boot a Win8.1 amd64 ISO, select Repair > Advanced > Command Prompt > Run bootrec.exe /fixmbr, it works fine and corrects the issue so I thought "Why not add bootrec to our amd64 WinPE.wim?" I copied what I thought were the necessary files into our amd64 winpe.wim, based on the following sites: https://channel9.msdn.com/forums/TechOff/456721-Windows-PE-with-BOOTRECEXE/ http://gregwoods.co.uk/2010/04/creating-a-winpe-boot-dvd-for-disk-cloning/ http://www.audiodude.nl/?p=1217 I even pulled in the MUI's from WinSxS into the WIM And although it appears to run successfully, it executes and produces no errors, it doesn't seem to actually be doing anything as the problem persists on a reboot. Running bootrec /fixmbr and/or bootrec /fixboot multiple times in our amd64 WinPE media doesn't work; but booting a amd64 Win8.1 ISO and running bootrec /fixmbr once works. I've tried the following with no positive results: Creating a diskpart script to sel dis 0 and clean isn't sufficient; doesn't wipe the MBR Converting the disk to GPT then back to MBR, but prior to the format & partition step, will remove bootguard. HOWEVER, it causes the TS to fail once it gets into Windows with the following error: "Wizard Error: Unable to find the SMS Task Sequencer. The deployment will not proceed." I've tried doing this two ways, and while it clears the MBR, I get the 'Wizard Error' above. 1) Via a Task Sequence step that runs a diskpart script (again, prior to the format & partition step), and 2) Adding 'oUtility.RunCommandWrite oExec, "CONVERT GPT NOERR"' to around line 340 of the ZTIDiskPart script. Symantec says that uninstrumenting the drive should correct this, but you cannot uninstrument an encrypted disk and the decryption process takes way too long. (About 24 hours) Secure wiping the disk (e.g.: via WipeDisk, DBAN) works but takes way too long. (Several hours) Thoughts?
  10. Hi, if you are using UDI wizard to deploy your OS and If you want to have drivers installed for same laptop/machine but different OS you need to add a condition for both packages: 1. First you configure the operating systems in UDI wizard, then their name (Image Name, NOT display Name!) is what counts. 2. Then you implement OS into UDI task sequence, and for that to work you also use OSDImageName variable. For example Windows 7 x64 Enterprise you Add condition->TS variable->OSDImageName equals "Windows 7 x64 Enterprise", I got that name from UDI wizard. For Windows 8 x64 the same, just make another step including Install Operating system Windows 8 and change the variable according to the name. 3. Then create install driver steps both for different OS and also add the condition like bellow: You have to specify both conditions in order to work, otherwise it will install both driver packages. Thanks,
  11. Hi, I have created a .iso file using the create task sequence media option for Standalone media. Now I need to burn it to a DVD. Please let me know the steps. 1. I have tried to burn it by right click and burn disk image. This does not make it bootable. Should I use any 3rd party apps and which file should be referred to make it bootable. Below are the files from the .iso file.
  12. Hi Guys, Wanted to know if anyone has been able to create a method where they can identify when a particular Workstation was imaged and the name of the Task Sequence Used. Im looking to do this and just wanted some ideas on how to go about doing this. SCCM 2012 R2, MDT integrated. Thank you.
  13. The Global condition is looking at Active Directory site, other global conditions work fine from the task sequence
  14. Hi, Can someone please point me in the right direction so I can set the "IT Organization" name in the Task Sequence progress window. I've set this in the custom client settings which is deployed to the same collection as the task sequence. When I run a task sequence that captures User State (requires task sequence to be launched from Windows) the "IT Organization" works fine and it displays our company name. However, when I PXE boot a task sequence for a task sequence with no USMT capture, it only displays "IT Organization" in the task sequence progress window. This is when I launch from Software Center:
  15. Greetings All, I am having a bit of trouble creating a TS that creates two partitions. If I only have one it works perfectly as soon as I try and add the second the TS fails. I can see what is causing the failure but i don't know why. Let me know if any other info is needed. Desired Outcome: Windows 7 with two partitons C: and D: (system and data respectively) <-- This part does actually occur. But I end up with a partially imaged machine. Partition TS Step: The Cause: The _SMSTaskSequence folder gets placed on D: then after the step below occurs it starts looking for the TS files to be on E: which doesn't exist. (Full log attached) Cheers, Mike smsts.log
  16. Hi, I have a requirement to partition disks during OSD. I have used step Partition Disk 0 to create a single drive. Below are scenarios I would like advice on. 1. Creating C:\ 200GB & D:\ 300GB from a single disk of 500GB 2. D:\ if existing should not be formatted.
  17. Hi I still have problems with deploying Bitlocker in our environment (on laptops that don't need / haven't been reinstalled through SCCM yet) We switched to SCCM from Altiris around 2 years ago, the laptops that were installed through Altiris were setup with 2 partitions and the ones installed through SCCM I only installed Win7 Ent on 1 partition. See attached screenshots. Any ideas on the error message in the smsts.log file from the Altiris laptop (the one I have marked with a green square)?
  18. We are experience issues trying to deploy software packages via task sequences in SCCM 2012. The task sequences deploy to our test collections and report as being 100% compliant but no software is ever deployed. If we choose to deploy the software with wakeup packets the client computer turns on but the process goes no further. We are able to deploy packages to collections outside of task sequences without any issue. This is a brand new SCCM 2012 server which we are in the process of testing, we having a fully working and operational SCCM 2007 environment which we plan on eventually migrating over. During the course of the 2012 install we choose initially to have only 1 distribution point, and then to share the distribution points from the 2007 setup, our plan once finished was to then uninstall the 2007 distribution points and re-setup them up as 2012. The packages are definitely assigned to the distribution points and indeed the task sequences appear and pop up on the client computers within software center. The SMSTS.log on the client computers do not seem to update and neither does the distmgr.log, I can only assume we have missed something in the SCCM 2012 setup, task sequences & software deployments are not a problem in 2007. Is someone please able to put us out of our misery and point us in the right direction, thanks
  19. Hello, I am trying to run a OSD task sequence on a Dell XPS 13 laptop. This particular model does not have an ethernet port built in, and requires a ethernet to USB dongle. I have baked the drivers for the Dell LAN7500 into the image itself and everything is downloading, such as the driver packages and applications. The only problem is that it will not join the domain. My theory is that the dongle driver isn't ready to use until after the initial reboot and setup of the Windows installation, which happens after the Apply Network Settings step. I have tried moving that step to after the initial reboot, but it just hangs and eventually errors out. Has anyone successfully done this? Thanks! TheWes
  20. Hello, I am running into an Issue with software distribution on task sequences after upgrading to Configmgr 2012 from SP1 to R2 I have a single site with two DPs that were upgraded to Configmgr2012 R2 and then with CU3 The upgrade process ran smoothly but now I am having an issue with software packages in task sequences. Ever since after the upgrade, none of the software packages, with the exception of the Configmgr client, are getting deployed on a TS. I looked at the DPs and the packages content has been distributed. When imaging computers, task sequences successfully run go up to the OS Installation and the configmgr client tasks. What is interesting is the the packages are available on the Software Center, even on the recently imaged computers (the ones that didn't get the packages installed during he TS). I can add more information from the TS logs but first wanted to see if anybody has experienced similar issues after the upgrade and how you figured the problem out. Thanks for looking. Mariorami.
  21. Hi All, I'm having an issue with OSD on the XPS 13 9333. I can PXE boot the device and install the OS I also applied all the drivers from the driver CAB on the DELL website (http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/2065). The problem I have is after the task sequence installs the OS and drivers it reboot to windows 7, once it reboots the USB ethernet is no longer installed so the task sequence fails. I'm using a Dell fm76n usb ethernet device for the network and I've create a driver package to install the driver that came with the device however it still will not build please help
  22. Hello Everybody, I am new to SCCM 2012 and have been struggling with an issue for the past 3 days and am tired of hitting my head against a brick wall. Here I'm deploying Windows 7 x64 and it installed perfectly fine onto the required Hardware & VM. Although in both platforms the Task Sequence fails straight away with the exact same error in the SMSTS.log file. I cant make heads or tails of the actual log file and needs some help to decode the endless lines of code Can someone point me in the right direction?
  23. Hello, I am having an issue at my site where some applciations do not seem to be deploying. It was deploying all applications then we started having troubles that we first thought was an issue with imaging. But now we are thinking that it was something with our applications this whole time. Here are some of the steps that tried. We tried to validate applications and packages then tried to re-deploy them. THis did not work. We then pulled certain apps and packages from the DP, waited, then re-deployed them. Still no luck We finally removed the DP role waited several hours then re-added the role. After that we added the task Sequences back and tried to image a few different models of machines. We were getting a basic image with most but not all applications and packages that were a part of the task sequences. We then removed everything from the TS and re deployed a bare TS. The machines received the OS, and joined the domain, as well as recieving anything that was apart of the base image. (office 2013, etc.) We then built a new application - non virtual. Loaded it onto the DP and pushed it out with no issue. We then began re-distibuting applications that recenlty stopped deploying. It became hit or miss as to whether or not the application showed up. We have tried virtual applications as well as non virtual application deployments with the same mixed results. Any help would be great. Thanks, Here is the message that we are recieving when we check the logs: Successfully sent location services HTTP failure message. 24. Hi. CM2012 SP1. Trying to generate reports of OSD task sequence usage, it appears that the deployment names are static, and don't actually reflect the current name of the TS. E.g. if I create and deploy a TS named "TEST - Win7 64-bit" and then after testing is done, change the name to "Windows 7 64-bit, Off2013, HR apps," the reports don't see this name change. So running the "History of a TS deployment on a computer" or "Deployment status of all task sequence deployments" and the reports linked from it, they all reference the old names of the task sequences, instead of the current one. As far as I can tell, the name that the reports show is the name that the task sequence had when it was initially deployed. E.g. if I create a new TS, change the name a few times, deploy it, and change the name again, the reports have whatever name was current when I created the deployment, not the ones it had before then, or what it was changed to after it was deployed. Aside from creating a new deployment when the TS name is changed (incidentally, deleting the old deployment removes all results from reporting) , does anyone know of a way to cause the system to show the current name assigned to the TS, or am I stuck having to cross-check Deployment IDs?
  25. Hello, I'm working on deploying a new master image, however I am running into an issue and I'm not sure of my way around it. I have a feeling what I am trying to do is either/both outside-the-box and/or just wrong. My Goal To bring deployment time down from 2-3 hours to 30-45 minutes. The master image will contain: Specific applications all users will receive Updates up to the quarter (latest build) of the mater image (intend to rebuild the master image every quarter, rolling any new updates and applications required into it When using the mater image in a new task sequence I intend to run additional scripts to further modify the image on a user-to-user, group-to-group basis (security permissions, drive letter reassignment, etc.). My Problem I am able to create my mater image with CCM Client installed, as many guides suggest; however when I add this master image, containing the CCM Client, to a new task sequence I cannot then run further actions on the image. Any attempt to boot into the applied OS without running the "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" step results in a failed task sequence. I do not want to run the step again as it will attempt an uninstall, then re-install, of the already installed CCM Client on the master image. I have had issues in the past where either the uninstall, or re-install, of CCM Client in these situations have caused the task sequence deployments to crash 50% or more of the time. My Question Is there a way to perform more actions in a task sequence, after applying a master image that already has CCM Client installed, without re-installing CCM? Can I run a step the will perform all the steps in preparing the environment to continue installations without actually performing the CCM setup? I would appreciate any and all advice/pointers I receive in this matter. Thank you.
